Famous People Freak Me Out
Famous people freak me out
(including clout),
and here’s why!
(Especially if they got it for no reason,
from being born in the right place,
with the right race,
at the right time,
parents as actors on TV
or blessed with inherited money)
In a herd society, we measure power by the unit of followers. Usually followers would be earned through deeds or speeches, display of knowledge or practiced talents for greatness. The unit was felt, but now it’s seen on a handheld screen. Those with the most followers have the most power because there’s strength in numbers, and the herd has no shortage there. The individual is powerless to those numbers; but where his subordination was the earned right of the strong, its now the threat of contingent strength, of a minnow dressed in the dazzling armor of Balenciaga and Acne! And such a minnow has believed itself to be a shark; it practices the rights of a shark as it stands atop the VIP booth of a rap show, ringed fingers around a glass, needing Xanax to induce laughs so, as it looks down at the minnow mass, it can forget, drown, suffocate the agonizing fact that keeps coming back in the back of its head chanting ‘YOU ARE ONE OF THEM.’
So it starves its thoughts,
and feeds its power,
showered in money and labels,
decked out in fool’s gold,
eye candy of appearances, but
DAMN does it look good! I mean
WOW! who cares if its fake
when it shines that bright,
right?
The shark dressed in wool, that’s who. His sweater itches; it gives him a rash when he moves. The agitation and rubbing stirs his anger. He’s the only one not blinded by lights. He recognizes the mask because in the mirror he sees what the mask tries to imitate. But he needs to cover in wool because he is a powerless one to their many, lead by a petulant leader who will destroy anything threatening his power at a petty whim, and given his followers, he would win!
Famous people freak me out
(Don’t forget the people with clout)
Because they have the power to destroy,
And because their power was given not earned,
They spend it impulsively, frivolously, passionately, wrathfully
To protect themselves from
Sharks.
Hungry sharks, made powerless, what do you do?
Die of madness from pretending
Or infiltrate to destroy from within?
